Christmas In Malaga 2019: Top Events To Know About

November 19, 2019/in Things To Do /by Yago Martinez

Looking for the ultimate Christmas destination?

You’ll search far and wide before you find anything as magnificent as Malaga in winter. Whether you’re looking for a regular vacation spot or a full-time residence, Malaga has plenty to offer.

In this article, we’ll discuss the top events that make Christmas in Malaga such a beautiful experience.

The Lights of Malaga

It’s considered one of the most beautiful Christmastime attractions in the world. Every year, the city puts on a fascinating light show throughout the downtown area. You can’t miss the lights of Malaga.

Millions of tiny, sparkling LED lights are strung up along the buildings and through the branches of the beautiful trees that line the streets. Don’t miss the lights on the Marquis de Larios roundabout and on Calle Larios. Other beautiful areas include Calle Granada, Calle San Juan, and Plaza de la Marina.

Mark your calendar for November 29th. This is the day the city switches on the lights for the first time at 7 pm. And it’s followed by a huge street party on Calle Larios with a late-night concert at Plaza de la Constitucion.

The Christmas Market

Malaga is a great shopping destination year-round. But this city really goes overboard during the holiday season.

Each of the small towns within the Malaga province hosts its own market. You’ll find everything you can imagine for holiday and Christmas decorations. Plus, there is plenty of local artwork and craft goods to choose from.

The market streets are also decorated with Christmas trees, Nativity scenes, and, of course, lots of lights! Take a lovely stroll, enjoy the mild weather, and find the perfect Christmas gifts for family and friends.

Food and the Festivals

We couldn’t talk about the Christmas season without mentioning food. The Malaga area is known for its sweet Christmas treats.

Polvoron is a delicious, crumbly shortbread that’s an essential part of a Spanish dinner table at Christmas time. This delicacy is made from flour, sugar, milk, and almonds. You can find these shortbreads at many speciality food markets throughout the city.

And while you’re munching on polvoron, don’t miss the festivals scheduled during the holiday season in Malaga. The Annual Verdiales Festival showcases a traditional version of flamenco dancing set to the music of a violin, guitars, and a tambourine. People gather in the streets on December 28th to dance and sing for this amazing festival.

Another popular festivity is the Creche contests that dot the villages and cities of the Costa del Sol. Area residents spend months preparing their Nativity scenes for the contest. Each scene puts its own spin on the story of the Nativity.

The biggest Creche contest happens in Fuengirola, which is about a 40-minute drive down the coast from Malaga. The city ropes off routes with signs to guide tourists through the spectacular showing of Nativity scenes.
