Mijas Golf Resort

June 21, 2018/0 Comments/in Things To Do /by Penny

Spain has always been a favourite tourist destination for the British, and it’s not hard to understand why. With its unique blend of history, culture, good food, and of course good weather, especially in the south, Spain offers the UK tourist everything they need, and more, for a comfortable and relaxed holiday.

But aside from the obvious advantages a Spanish holiday offers, the country gives many visitors some of the best golfing holidays in Spain, with top courses and facilities to take advantage of in the glorious weather. And with one of Europe’s most popular golf complexes right on our doorstep, Mijas Golf Club has not one, but two high-level 18-hole courses waiting for you.

Mijas Golf

Situated in the stunning Sierra de Mijas valley overlooking Fuengirola, Mijas Golf International is one of Spain and Europe’s most popular golf resorts. Opening in 1976, the first of its two courses, Los Lagos, was designed by renowned course architect, Robert Trent Jones Sr. Following its initial success, a second course, Los Olivos, again designed by Trent Jones Sr, opened in 1984.

Over the years, the courses have developed into one of Europe’s finest golf resorts, with facilities to match. The complex provides everything you need and includes practice areas for putting and chipping, buggy hire, individual lessons, as well as the refurbished Andalucian Corito (farmhouse) which now serves as the Mijas Golf Club House where you can relax and enjoy a cool drink before or after your round.

And of course, no luxury golf resort would be complete without its club shop, and Mijas Golf doesn’t disappoint. With a full itinerary of brand name golf apparel, accessories and equipment, you couldn’t ask for more, and you’ll look and feel like a pro. But what about the courses?

Los Lagos

The original and larger of the resort’s two courses, Los Lagos has a total area of 130 acres, and is famed for its undulating landscape, wide fairways lined with pines and willows, and mountainous backdrop. Not forgetting the nine lakes that give the course its name.

Refurbished in 2012, the 18-hole course offers you the opportunity to navigate its multitude of bunkers as you drive towards each of its large, flat greens. Suitable for a range of handicaps, the Par 72 course is ranked 20th of all Southern Spain courses and 45th in the country (out of 349).

Los Olivos

The smaller and younger of the two courses, the Par 70 Los Olivos covers around 100 acres and benefits from a similar landscape and mountainous backdrop as its larger counterpart. But with fewer water hazards, this tighter, hillier course is peppered with olive trees and elevated greens.

Upgraded in 2000/01 by course designer, Cabell B. Robinson, a former colleague of Trent Jones Sr, Mijas Golf’s second 18-hole course is suited to players with a higher technical ability and lower handicap. Ranked 41st in all Southern Spain courses and 86th in the country, Los Olivos is the perfect compliment to Los Lagos.

Golfing holidays in Spain

Excluding the two courses in Mijas Golf, there’s a choice of around 8 other courses within driving distance of Mijas that are certainly on a par with them. With excellent playability all round and spectacular views thrown in, teeing up for your golfing holidays in Spain is everything you could wish for.
