Things To Do In Mijas Spain

Things To Do In Mijas Spain

December 19, 2019/0 Comments/in Things To Do /by Yago Martinez

Spain is a popular holiday resort for couples, families and friends that are looking for a fun and sunshine packed break. It is also a chosen destination for those who are looking to retire from the hectic nature of UK life and really spend their twilight years resting.

There are plenty of great places to visit or relocate to throughout Spain, and the Costa Del Sol seems to be a choice that appears on lists time and time again when looking for things to do in Mijas Spain. Perhaps it is the mixture of modern facilities with some of the charming beauty of classic Spanish towns and villages?

One great example of that Spanish charm is Mijas. Mijas is more than just a bustling city with plenty to do. It is a mountain town that has some of the most beautiful views of the Costa Del Sol that you are likely to see and best of all it is a coastal region too.

So if you are planning to visit Mijas, either for the week or for a few more, then here are some of the very best things that you should have on your must see list.

Beaches In Mijas

Spain is world famous for its beaches and it is often the reason that people will choose it as their holiday destination or place of residence. The good news is that Mijas has around 12km of beautiful beaches to choose from. With beautiful golden sands and an inviting warm sea, what more could you wish for?

Mayan Monkey Mijas Chocolate Factory

If you are staying in Mijas with your little travellers, you should make sure that you have Mayan Monkey Mijas Chocolate Factory on your list of things to do in Mijas Spain. Known to be one of the smallest chocolate factories in the world; here you cannot only see chocolates be made but enjoy a few samples of the delicious treats too!

To find out more, take a look at their website here: http://www.mayanmonkey.es.

Museum of Miniatures

Another interesting place to visit is the Museum of Miniatures. Packed full with curiosities that are not only intriguing but utterly fascinating too. From dressed fleas and carved toothpicks; this museum is definitely worth a visit.

To find out more, visit: http://www.mijas.es/portal/en/museum/museum-of-miniatures.

Wine Museum Of Mijas

A museum now that is solely for the grown-ups! The wine museum is a chance to get up close and personal with some of the heritage of the area; really delicious wine. Not only a cultural trip through the history of winemaking in Spain but the building itself that the museum is based is a beautiful piece of architecture. Best of all, once you have worked up a thirst exploring all that culture, it’s time to sample the fruit of their labour!

To find out more, visit their website: http://www.museovinomalaga.org.

Museo Histórico – Etnológico

If you’re interested in the history of Mijas’ Spain, Pueblo’s History and Ethnology museum is a must-see during your stay. A small, quaint building located in the village’s town hall, visitors get an instant feel for the history of the small village.

One of the museum’s most notable features is right inside the entrance. Two large plaster sculptures of Hercules frame the doorway, positioned as if they’re holding the building up.

This historical location showcases plenty of exhibits where you’ll learn about centuries-old industries and trades. Visitors will see first-hand the tools and methods used in trades such as baking, basket-weaving, wine-making, fishing, and carpentry.

Several rooms of the museum are designed to represent the interior of rural homes, giving visitors a true feel for how Mija people lived centuries ago.

To find out more, visit: http://www.andalucia.org/en/cultural-tourism/visits/malaga/museos/museo-historico-etnologico-de-mijas/.

Castillo de Colomares

Are you interested in Spanish architecture? The Castillo de Colomares is a breathtaking sight you simply can’t miss.

The architectural design is synonymous with Spanish romantic expression with undertones of gothic, renaissance details. A notable feature is an oriental-style pagoda added in honour of Columbus who was originally searching for a route to China.

Designed by the doctor Esteban Martín y Martín in honour of Christopher Columbus, the fairytale castle was designed and built in the mid-80s. What makes this creation even more amazing is that it was constructed by just two people!

It took local bricklayers over seven years to complete the project.

To find out more, visit: http://www.castillomonumentocolomares.com/.

Bioparc Fuengirola

Travelling with small children or simply an animal lover yourself? The Bioparc Fuengirola located on the Costa del Sol is not your ordinary zoo and is one of the most popular things to do in Mijas.

Large enclosures are cascaded across the grounds closely resembling the animals’ original habitats. The zoo is home to over 200 animals in four different zones. Visitors will see animal species from Southeast Asia, Equatorial Africa, Madagascar, and the Indo-Pacific.

Some favourite animals include gorillas, hippos, orangutans, tigers, and meerkats. The venue also offers extended hours in the summer so visitors can see nocturnal animals in their natural habitats.

To find out more, visit: https://www.bioparcfuengirola.es/.

Parque Acuático Mijas

Looking for a more action-packed attraction? The Parque Acuático Mijas is a tropical oasis turned water park that the whole family will love.

With live entertainment, mini-golf, and a wave pool, there’s truly something for everyone.

The layout of the park is breathtaking. Grass areas offer tropical sunshades perfect for an outdoor picnic. Parents can relax here while the kids enjoy countless pools and speed slides.

If you have smaller, non-swimmers, Lizard Island showcases a climbing area surrounded by shallow water.

The park also boasts mini-golf and live entertainment geared towards children.

To find out more, visit: https://www.aquamijas.com/.

Benalmádena Butterfly Park

Another Mija attraction for animal lovers is the Benalmádena Butterfly Park located just a 15-minute drive from Mijas Pueblo. Visitors are greeted by a picturesque Thai-style temple with blue tile roofs imported from Thailand.

The interior is filled with a variety of butterflies from tropical regions around the world. Expect warm temperatures inside the temple to accommodate the many species.

Children will be captivated by over 1,000 brightly-coloured butterflies flying overhead. If you’re lucky, a few might even land on your fingertips or nose. Just be sure not to touch the butterfly’s delicate wings and check your clothing before exiting the park.

Visitors will also enjoy an educational experience at the park where they can view caterpillars, butterfly eggs, and learn the entire lifecycle.

Retirement Homes In Spain

September 23, 2017/0 Comments/in Buying /by Yago Martinez

Whether it’s a choice between the bustling city life, with their parks, museums and cafés or the sun-drenched beaches along the Costa Del Sol of Andalucia, Spain holds a fascination for the British like no other European country. But when you’re looking at retirement homes in Spain, there’s more to consider than just the weather.

Of course, good weather and the laid-back lifestyle of Spain will always appeal to anyone looking to retire there. But when it comes to packing up your life and moving to a new country, there’s a lot of pros and cons to weigh up. But let’s look at some of the bigger practicalities you’ll need to consider.

Finding The Right Retirement Homes In Spain

This may sound obvious, but permanently moving to Spain is wildly different to being on holiday for a couple of weeks. You should always carry out lots of research on your preferred area, deciding on whether you favour a home within a short walking distance to the beach, or if you want to take advantage of somewhere further inland like some of the more secluded Mijas villas.

There’s lots of other things to take into account for retirement homes in Spain as well, such as proximity to shops, restaurants or doctors and dentists. Also try considering what life might be like in 10 or 20 years time. You may well be fit and active when you retire and move, but think about whether your new home might be in a particularly hilly region or have lots of steps to tackle and how it might affect you.

Health And Healthcare

Planning ahead and getting your healthcare arranged before you retire is essential. Though Spain has a good national health system for locals and visitors alike, there may be some restrictions as to what treatments and services you might be entitled to as an ex-pat.

Many retirees arrange for private healthcare if they can afford it, making sure they have access to all services with a considerably shorter waiting time. If this is an option, your health insurance should be valid and kept updated.

Secure Your Finances

It’s important to get professional advice from an independent financial advisor before you retire to Spain for clarity on any issues. When it comes to your UK State and private pensions, speaking to the HMRC beforehand should guarantee your State pension remains, but they’ll also be able to give you important advice on any tax issues.

State pensions can either be paid into a UK bank account as normal or a Spanish bank account in Euros. If you choose the latter, it’s worth noting that the amount could change due to fluctuating exchange rates.

Embrace The Culture

While there’s a lot to think about beforehand, living in Spain opens up a whole new chapter in your life with much to look forward to. But searching for retirement homes in Spain, whether you’re choosing between luxurious Mijas villas, comfortable townhouses or beachside apartments, should be just the start of your adventure.

While the day to day Spanish way of life might come as a bit of a culture shock at first, embracing their lifestyle and traditions will soon help you to settle in and feel part of the community – especially the food, wine, and siestas!

The History of Mijas

August 23, 2016/0 Comments/in Things To Do /by Yago Martinez

When it comes to transformations, Mijas definitely has undergone some huge changes over the years. From humble beginnings as a fishing village, it is now a popular holiday resort. However, unlike some areas of the world, this doesn’t mean it has lost its Spanish charm.

A Beautiful Fishing Town

When you think about the quintessential Spanish village, you are likely to conjure up images of whitewashed houses nestled together on narrow, winding streets.

Perhaps this is why Mijas is a place that so many fall in love with.

If you take a walk through Mijas then you will find a beautiful Andalucian village feel with stunning narrow cobbled streets. This really showcases the true heritage of the area and why it became a popular place for artists and creative minds to settle.

Steeped in culture as well as charm, Mijas was known as an area that attracted artists and creative minds, all of which took their inspiration from the local way of life and breath-taking views that could be taken in over the water.

The stunning blue waters were a main focus of the area, with fishing part of the economy and even a few pirates trying to make an appearance.

Life was quaint, quiet and relaxed. A real sense of Spanish manana!

A Vibrant Holiday Destination

Nowadays, Mijas is more than just a quaint fishing town, it has become a place that families and couples alike come to rest, relax and unwind.

Golf has become a huge part of Mijas life, with a variety of amazing courses spread throughout the area, all just perfect for when you fancy upping your handicap.

Not only some perfect golf, Mijas is also packed full of attractions, hotels, restaurants and a whole other variety of amazing reasons to visit.

If this wasn’t enough, Mijas boasts some really impressive weather. Perfect if you are looking for somewhere that you can soak up some rays all year round.

One thing is for sure, no matter how many changes have been made to Mijas over the years, it still retains all the charm and appeal that draw people to visit each and every year.

If you really find yourself falling in love with the new and improved Mijas, then why not consider looking to buy a property in the area? That way you can be a part of the future of this beautiful and vibrant area, so contact Property In Mijas now to find the perfect home from home.

Selling A Lifestyle

June 20, 2014/0 Comments/in Selling /by Yago Martinez

Selling properties is more about selling a lifestyle, than selling bricks and mortar. This is particularly relevant to holiday homes in premium locations such as Puebla Aida, at Mijas Golf in the Costa del Sol, according to Jane Cooper at Dressed2Sell, one of the UK’s top home staging consultancies.

As Jane comments, “Potential buyers are seeking an aspirational lifestyle – somewhere to relax and really enjoy life. Our job is to make that as simple as possible for them to imagine – from the first time they see the property on the internet to the moment they walk through the door.”

“At Dressed2Sell, we advise clients to consider who their target audience will be – a young family, retired couple, young professionals …. this will influence how best to present and market a property. It’s good to put yourself in the buyer’s shoes.”

That said, there are several key tips that will increase a property’s appeal to all audiences and put you ahead of the game when selling. Whether you are looking for properties in Mijas, or any other premium location, the same rules will always apply. “When buyers are comparing properties, you want to make sure that yours is the property they remember ….. for all the right reasons!” says Jane.

Property Preparation Tips

Dressed2Sell’s top tips when preparing your property for market:

  • Show off your assets! A beautiful marble tiled floor is a selling point needs to be shown off. By removing runners and busy patterned rugs, your property will also look lighter and more spacious. If you have a stunning fireplace, don’t put things in front of it or clutter it up with ornaments etc. Let it stand out as a focus of attention.
  • You are selling a lifestyle – and nothing sells that like the thought of a chilled glass of wine on the balcony while the sun goes down! So, make sure the balcony is immaculate and that your furniture is good quality and attractive. It can be difficult to keep pots and plants watered if you are away, so instead, invest in some attractive lanterns and candles. For marketing photographs and viewings, make sure there are wine, glasses, olives etc on the table to suggest a relaxed, aspirational lifestyle.
  • Keep all surfaces free of clutter, cut down on over personalised family photos, thin out books and remove items from the top shelves of units (this gives the illusion of even higher ceilings).
  • Keep things fresh – place fragranced diffusers in bathrooms. Go for light, spring like scents. Use cling film over plug holes to protect against any stale drain smells which tend to build when the property is empty, it really works!
  • In bathrooms, hide away all clutter and cleaning materials. Have fluffy white towels for viewings and marketing photographs and display only premium brand toiletries and perfumes. This will give a more luxurious hotel/spa feel.
  • As it is impossible to maintain fresh flowers inside a property when you are not there, invest in some good quality faux flower displays. White orchids, lilies or amarylis work particularly well. They look very elegant and go with most décor. Never have dried flowers – they look dull and dusty!
  • Avoid too many strong colours, patterns and heavy fabrics, which soak up light. Keep things simple. Freshen up a tired sofa with new cushions in light neutral colours. Light coloured wood or glass furniture will make a room look bigger, and simply removing unnecessary items of dark heavy furniture can have good results.
  • Mirrors are great at creating the illusion of more light and space, so if you have a dark area in a room, hang a mirror, not a picture.
  • In the kitchen, keep surfaces clear, except for smart chrome appliances such as a toaster and kettle. If you have one, a coffee maker is also a nice aspirational touch.
  • To avoid white kitchens looking bland, add pots of artificial herbs, and glass jars of coloured pasta or lentils on surfaces. These also photograph well.
  • Get the cleaners in regularly to maintain a fresh, smart appearance and air the property.
  • Finally, make sure you are 100% happy with your marketing photos – the crucial first step to getting those viewings!
