Things To Do In Mijas Spain

December 19, 2019/0 Comments/in Things To Do /by Penny

Spain is a popular holiday resort for couples, families and friends that are looking for a fun and sunshine packed break. It is also a chosen destination for those who are looking to retire from the hectic nature of UK life and really spend their twilight years resting.

There are plenty of great places to visit or relocate to throughout Spain, and the Costa Del Sol seems to be a choice that appears on lists time and time again when looking for things to do in Mijas Spain. Perhaps it is the mixture of modern facilities with some of the charming beauty of classic Spanish towns and villages?

One great example of that Spanish charm is Mijas. Mijas is more than just a bustling city with plenty to do. It is a mountain town that has some of the most beautiful views of the Costa Del Sol that you are likely to see and best of all it is a coastal region too.

So if you are planning to visit Mijas, either for the week or for a few more, then here are some of the very best things that you should have on your must see list.

Beaches In Mijas

Spain is world famous for its beaches and it is often the reason that people will choose it as their holiday destination or place of residence. The good news is that Mijas has around 12km of beautiful beaches to choose from. With beautiful golden sands and an inviting warm sea, what more could you wish for?

Mayan Monkey Mijas Chocolate Factory

If you are staying in Mijas with your little travellers, you should make sure that you have Mayan Monkey Mijas Chocolate Factory on your list of things to do in Mijas Spain. Known to be one of the smallest chocolate factories in the world; here you cannot only see chocolates be made but enjoy a few samples of the delicious treats too!

To find out more, take a look at their website here: http://www.mayanmonkey.es.

Museum of Miniatures

Another interesting place to visit is the Museum of Miniatures. Packed full with curiosities that are not only intriguing but utterly fascinating too. From dressed fleas and carved toothpicks; this museum is definitely worth a visit.

Wine Museum Of Mijas

A museum now that is solely for the grown-ups! The wine museum is a chance to get up close and personal with some of the heritage of the area; really delicious wine. Not only a cultural trip through the history of winemaking in Spain but the building itself that the museum is based is a beautiful piece of architecture. Best of all, once you have worked up a thirst exploring all that culture, it’s time to sample the fruit of their labour!

Museo Histórico – Etnológico

If you’re interested in the history of Mijas’ Spain, Pueblo’s History and Ethnology museum is a must-see during your stay. A small, quaint building located in the village’s town hall, visitors get an instant feel for the history of the small village.

One of the museum’s most notable features is right inside the entrance. Two large plaster sculptures of Hercules frame the doorway, positioned as if they’re holding the building up.

This historical location showcases plenty of exhibits where you’ll learn about centuries-old industries and trades. Visitors will see first-hand the tools and methods used in trades such as baking, basket-weaving, wine-making, fishing, and carpentry.

Several rooms of the museum are designed to represent the interior of rural homes, giving visitors a true feel for how Mija people lived centuries ago.

Castillo de Colomares

Are you interested in Spanish architecture? The Castillo de Colomares is a breathtaking sight you simply can’t miss.

The architectural design is synonymous with Spanish romantic expression with undertones of gothic, renaissance details. A notable feature is an oriental-style pagoda added in honour of Columbus who was originally searching for a route to China.

Designed by the doctor Esteban Martín y Martín in honour of Christopher Columbus, the fairytale castle was designed and built in the mid-80s. What makes this creation even more amazing is that it was constructed by just two people!

It took local bricklayers over seven years to complete the project.

Bioparc Fuengirola

Travelling with small children or simply an animal lover yourself? The Bioparc Fuengirola located on the Costa del Sol is not your ordinary zoo and is one of the most popular things to do in Mijas.

Large enclosures are cascaded across the grounds closely resembling the animals’ original habitats. The zoo is home to over 200 animals in four different zones. Visitors will see animal species from Southeast Asia, Equatorial Africa, Madagascar, and the Indo-Pacific.

Some favourite animals include gorillas, hippos, orangutans, tigers, and meerkats. The venue also offers extended hours in the summer so visitors can see nocturnal animals in their natural habitats.

Parque Acuático Mijas

Looking for a more action-packed attraction? The Parque Acuático Mijas is a tropical oasis turned water park that the whole family will love.

With live entertainment, mini-golf, and a wave pool, there’s truly something for everyone.

The layout of the park is breathtaking. Grass areas offer tropical sunshades perfect for an outdoor picnic. Parents can relax here while the kids enjoy countless pools and speed slides.

If you have smaller, non-swimmers, Lizard Island showcases a climbing area surrounded by shallow water.

The park also boasts mini-golf and live entertainment geared towards children.

Benalmádena Butterfly Park

Another Mija attraction for animal lovers is the Benalmádena Butterfly Park located just a 15-minute drive from Mijas Pueblo. Visitors are greeted by a picturesque Thai-style temple with blue tile roofs imported from Thailand.

The interior is filled with a variety of butterflies from tropical regions around the world. Expect warm temperatures inside the temple to accommodate the many species.

Children will be captivated by over 1,000 brightly-coloured butterflies flying overhead. If you’re lucky, a few might even land on your fingertips or nose. Just be sure not to touch the butterfly’s delicate wings and check your clothing before exiting the park.

Visitors will also enjoy an educational experience at the park where they can view caterpillars, butterfly eggs, and learn the entire lifecycle.
